It is said that autonomous driving is the future of automobiles, and a large amount of capital has been invested in the development of automobile autonomous driving technology. Technology companies such as Huawei, Nvidia, and Intel are all vigorously developing autopilot chips. Technology companies such as Baidu and Google have been working in the field of autonomous driving for many years.

According to the standards established by the American Society of Automotive Engineers and the American Highway Safety Administration, autonomous driving technology is divided into five levels. The lowest level L0 means that the vehicle only has a reminder and warning function and will not interfere with the driver's operation; while the highest level L5 is fully automatic driving without human intervention.

However, in fact, autonomous driving is still far away from our mass consumers at this stage. Even Tesla, which is currently recognized as the best commercial autonomous driving technology, has Autopilot that allows cars to actively change lanes and enter the ramp. Calls itself an automatic driving assistance function. And when opening, you must maintain the posture of holding the steering wheel to prevent accidents.

But this does not mean that automatic assisted driving is a tasteless, L2 level of automatic assisted driving technology is already very mature. At present, most car companies already have corresponding solutions, and the corresponding functions have been popularized in mainstream models with more than 100,000. Although it is not possible to achieve fully automatic driving, the existence of assisted driving functions can indeed reduce the probability of accidents during driving and improve the comfort of the driver during the driving process.

The following are some assisted driving functions that I find very useful when driving. You can use them as a reference when buying a car.

ACC adaptive cruise

ACC adaptive cruise can be said to be an upgraded version of fixed speed cruise, which is different from the active monitoring of the vehicle in front during the cruise. When using ACC adaptive cruise, you only need to set the speed and following distance, then you can take your right foot off the throttle. The vehicle will automatically adjust its speed according to the conditions of the vehicle in front, and will actively brake when necessary.

Turning on the ACC adaptive cruise on high speeds, elevated highways or traffic jams will really save you a lot of worry. Of course, drivers still have to hold the steering wheel and always pay attention to the surrounding road conditions.

AEB active brake

Through the millimeter wave radar and camera at the front of the car, the vehicle can recognize the vehicle and pedestrian information in real time. If the vehicle in front suddenly slows down or a pedestrian suddenly crosses the road, active braking can prevent a collision or greatly reduce the degree of injury. Although we cannot completely rely on the active braking system, accidents are also inaccurate. Active braking is like buying insurance to reduce the damage to others when an accident occurs. We don't want the active brake function to be useful for one day, but as long as it is used once, it is the most useful function of this car.

Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keeping System

As the name suggests, it is to keep the car in its own lane. If there is a deviation from the lane (the lane is changed without lighting), the car will warn and correct the lane. This function is usually turned on by default. Generally speaking, as long as the driver's license is not bought, it will not often need to be corrected by the system when driving.

The function of lane keeping is mainly reflected in the ACC adaptive cruise or cruise control, or when the driver accidentally loses control of the steering wheel, the car will not suddenly turn to another lane and cause an accident.

Parallel auxiliary

When driving, although the field of vision that can be observed by the rearview mirror is large enough, the blind spot of the driver is not small, especially for the observation of the rear of the car. The parallel assist is to use radar and camera detection to give early warning to the vehicles behind the side. Avoid accidents due to visual blind spots when changing lanes.

Many people confuse the parallel assist with the use of 360 panoramic images. During high-speed driving, it is impossible for us to watch 360 images for a long time, not to mention that the central control screen of some models is too far away from the windshield. When changing lanes, we will first look at the rear-view mirror. At this time, the parallel auxiliary reminder set on the A-pillar or rear-view mirror of the vehicle is obviously more convenient.

The 360 panoramic image is more to allow the driver to see the surroundings of the car clearly, and to avoid the collision of the vehicle when driving slowly, causing economic losses.

Automatic parking

In the second test, although we have practiced parking operations thousands of times, the detailed operations of parking cars with different length wheelbases are different, and the width of the parking space also affects the judgment. Therefore, the automatic parking function is a very good selling point for those who do not have enough parking skills.

At present, there is a big gap in the automatic parking function on the market. The ability to accurately identify the parking space and how people need to operate the vehicle all affect the experience of this function. Park sideways, reverse into the garage, or drive in at a 45-degree angle. The more operations you can perform, the better. In addition, if people are still sitting in the car during automatic parking, this function is actually unnecessary. But if people are allowed to get off the car, this function is very mature and effective, and you can rest assured that the car will stop by itself.
