Not long ago, Wang Chuanfu, chairman of BYD, announced that the “blade battery” exclusively developed by BYD will be packaged into CTP for the first mass production in March, and a new model of BYD application will be released in June.

According to BYD, the volume of CTP of this blade battery can be increased by about 50% compared with the energy density, and the cost is estimated to be reduced by 20% – 30%. ”
As soon as this statement was made, the capital market immediately made a response: after Monday’s trading limit, BYD’s shares opened + 8% on Tuesday; by the time of publication, BYD’s market value was once close to 150 billion, and its price earnings ratio was 69 times far higher than the 58 times of Ningde’s era, with some shares returning to their peak momentum.
But don’t forget that this context took place when the first batch of “cabbage price” model 3 of Tesla’s Shanghai factory was offline.
Wang Chuanfu responded that & ldquo; Han & rdquo; is different from Tesla’s product positioning, and there is differentiated competition, so (Tesla) has a very limited impact on us.
In addition, according to Wang Chuanfu, blade batteries will be produced in Chongqing for the first time in March, and then will be carried on the new model & ldquo; Han & rdquo; to be launched in June this year.
What is BYD’s “blade battery”? Compared with the traditional lithium iron phosphate battery, in addition to the “volume energy ratio” improvement, what are the advantages of blade battery?
In order to meet the general direction of market transformation, Ningde times and BYD, which rank first and second in market value in the lithium industry, successively launched new battery technology with strict patent protection, which is often said by the insiders: CTP (cell to pack), modular free power battery pack and blade battery pack (blade battery-ctp).

In short, the Ningde era integrates cells directly into battery packs. Don’t underestimate the process of & ldquo; Integration & rdquo;. As the battery module assembly link is omitted, compared with the traditional battery pack, the volume utilization rate of CTP battery pack is increased by 15% – 20%, the number of battery pack parts is reduced by 40%, the production efficiency in mass production is increased by 50%, and the manufacturing cost of power battery is greatly reduced.
In addition, combined with the super fast charging technology of Ningde era, CTP battery pack can increase the SOC of battery from 8% to 80% in 15 minutes.
It is reported that Ningde era CTP has been used in BAIC EU5 mass production vehicles.
BYD, which specializes in lithium iron phosphate batteries, has chosen a similar technology route. The main motivation lies in two contradictions of the traditional battery pack:
1. The volume ratio of “cell” and “battery pack” is too low, which is not flattering.
2. There are too many problems with the “battery module” in the middle link, and the failure rate is high.
Two contradictions can be solved at the same time – just assemble the cell into a battery pack.
But the problem is that the traditional bulk core is large in volume, poor in heat dissipation and difficult to integrate.
As a result, BYD launched the “blade battery” solution (i.e. the long cell solution). By increasing the length of the cell, the flat and long iron phosphate lithium cell was designed to facilitate integration. In addition, according to the whole package size of CTP, the length of the cell can be customized.
Previously, BYD planned that by 2020, the energy density of lithium iron phosphate monomer will be more than 180wh / kg, and the energy density of battery pack will also be more than 160wh / kg. The basis of this plan is likely to be CTP integration technology, which is realized by improving the space utilization rate of battery pack and the energy density of the system.
According to the patent data, the “volume energy ratio” of BYD blade battery is 50% higher than that of traditional iron battery.
At present, BYD said the “Han” with its own CTP has increased its endurance to 600 kilometers.
Globally, Tesla, Ningde times, BYD and beehive energy have successively started to develop and announce the mass production of CTP related products. The modular free power battery pack is becoming the mainstream technology route. It is expected that by 2025, the technical debate on CTP will also see practical results in the new models – it is the mule or the horse that comes out for a walk.

Last but not least, what we just said is how to improve the specific energy of batteries. In addition to batteries, another important indicator of electric vehicles is “power consumption”. In short, it can be compared with the fuel consumption of 100km, i.e. & how much electricity does the vehicle need to consume in 100km;.
According to the development plan of new energy vehicles, by 2025, the electric energy consumption of pure electric vehicles should be below 12 degrees on average. In order to achieve this goal, the new energy main engine plant makes great efforts on how to reduce the internal loss of battery pack, improve the efficiency of motor and reduce the wind resistance coefficient.
