The battery life easily breaks thousands of kilometers. NIO solid-state batteries are coming? Expert: It is impossible to commercialize in 5 years

On the "NIO Day" held on January 9 this year, NIO launched several big moves in succession. In addition to launching its first pure electric car, it also shocked the automotive industry that NIO will launch a 150kWh solid-state battery in 2022. .

Li Bin said: "We use the most advanced mass-produced solid-state battery technology to achieve an ultra-high energy density of 360wh/kg, and the battery life will exceed 1,000 kilometers."

Any point of breakthrough performance of the battery is a milestone in the current battery market. Since solid-state batteries have caused too much shock to the battery industry, it has caused a lot of bad news on the stock prices of many companies in the traditional liquid battery industry.

In the first two trading days of this week, the stock prices of electrolyte and diaphragm companies such as Xinzhoubang and Enjie have fallen sharply, and the stock prices of some companies have fallen by about 15%.

However, it is worth noting that for solid-state batteries, the industry has previously agreed that it is unlikely to be launched in the short term. The current global battery giant Ningde Times has stated that its solid-state batteries will not be launched until 2030, and Toyota, which entered the market earlier, will not be launched until 2025.

So why can NIO silently throw out a big move, rushing to start before the Ningde era or even Toyota?

In response, Xiong Baiqing, chairman of the Guolian Automobile Power Battery Research Institute, said that solid-state batteries will not be commercialized so quickly. "All-solid-state batteries are still far from commercialization, and it is still very difficult to even make a demonstration. It is very difficult to completely overcome all-solid -state batteries in 10 years. Anyway, at least these 5 years have been out of play, and we are also doing this thing."

Industry insiders analyze that the so-called solid-state batteries of NIO cars are actually solid-liquid hybrid batteries or semi-solid batteries. This is a transitional solution before the arrival of solid-state batteries, that is, the use of solid electrolytes and electrolytes at the same time, but the ratio and safety of the mixture of the two have not yet been determined internationally.

At present, the market's focus on NIO solid-state batteries is that the energy density of new batteries can reach 360wh/kg. Currently, the energy density of a single power battery in my country is only 280wh/kg.

The energy density of mainstream commercial lithium batteries is less than 250wh/kg, which means that NIO cars use about 50% more battery power than current mainstream batteries.

But Xiong Baiqing said that under the premise of ensuring safety, this is currently difficult to achieve. "I have never seen a report about what solid electrolyte is added to 360wh/kg.

There are 450wh/kg in the laboratory, and nearly 500wh/kg in my laboratory. However, in terms of overall performance, it is difficult to say whether the requirements for loading are satisfied. Because we all know that the higher the energy density, the worse the safety. "

In addition, from a cost perspective, electrolyte and diaphragm manufacturers do not have much market risk in the short term. Xiong Baiqing said: "Which solid electrolyte is not several times more expensive than the electrolyte, or even 10 times more expensive? Because the commercial competition of batteries is now in the market, every 1Wh costs 1 cent and 1 cent to reduce the cost, so there are costs here. problem."

Therefore, NIO Automobile has grabbed the headlines of the first "solid-state battery" this time, but its real performance level has not yet surfaced. At that time, it will be "the greater the hope, the greater the disappointment", or "the automotive power battery industry changes." , We also pay close attention to this.
