Last month, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Exynos brand, Samsung held an interview meeting to look forward to the next trend of the Samsung Exynos brand. On the day of the event, Dr. Pan Xuebao from the Samsung Semiconductor China Research Institute revealed that a flagship processor that integrates Samsung's latest technologies in 5G, AI, ISP, etc., uses 5nm technology, and is specially built for the Chinese market is coming. That is the first time the Exynos 1080 processor was unveiled in China.

In a month, after many sneak runs on the Internet and major running sub-platforms, this Samsung flagship processor chip for the mid-to-high-end market in 2021 was finally released.

Exynos 1080

When talking about the processor, because of its positioning as the core of all mobile phone hardware, we always give priority to its parameter list. The first thing that surprised me about the Samsung Exynos 1080 processor came from the configuration parameters.

From the "parameter table", Samsung Exynos 1080 processor uses Samsung's 5nm process. In terms of craftsmanship, it is at the same level as the Kirin 9000 series and Apple A14 series, the two top flagship processors in the industry. In terms of mobile phone processors, higher precision craftsmanship means better performance between chip performance and energy consumption. In this regard, Exynos 1080 did not disappoint us. Compared with 8nm LPP, the 5nm EUV process adopted by Exynos 1080 has improved performance by 14% and reduced power consumption by 30%; compared with 7nm DUV, it has improved performance by 7% and reduced power consumption by 18%. According to information given by Exynos, under the 5nm process, Exynos 1080 has achieved a 30% smaller logic area while increasing the efficiency by 15%.

At the process level, the 5nm EUV process used by Samsung Exynos 1080 is almost the ceiling of mobile processors this year. It is also a very interesting phenomenon that such a 5nm flagship process made its debut on the Exynos 1080 chip.

The second item that caught my attention is the choice of CPU and GPU. Last year, on the Exynos 980, Samsung's aggressive style has already emerged. In September 2019, Samsung's Exynos 980 processor was released, becoming the first mobile processor to use the A77 architecture CPU. One year and two months later, Samsung Exynos 1080 became the industry's first 5nm process A78 architecture CPU processor. Moreover, Samsung is even bolder in the choice of CPU this time.

Last year, Exynos 980 first released an eight-core architecture of 2×A77+6×A55; this year, Exynos 1080 is a three-cluster CPU system of 1×2.8GHz A78+3×2.6GHz A78+4×2.0GHz A55. Four A78 cores, taking into account high performance and power consumption considerations, supplemented by four A55 low-power cores, divide daily activities into three gears, high, medium and low, high-performance gaming, leisure and long battery life, without delay.

Of course, under the premise of taking into account the power consumption, the performance of the four A78 cores of Exynos 1080 is also outstanding. Cortex-A78, as the fourth-generation high-end CPU based on DynamIQ technology, has 20% higher performance than A77 under the same power consumption. As for the actual effect, according to the information given by Exynos, with GeekBenc 5 as the benchmark test, the performance of Exynos 1080 single-core is improved compared to the previous generation product.   50%, the multi-core performance is improved by nearly 2 times.

In terms of GPU, Exynos 1080 uses the latest ARM Mali-G78 solution, which is the same model as the Kirin 9000 series. Mali-G78 is a high-end GPU based on the second-generation Mali Valhall architecture, and its performance is up to 25% higher than Mali-G77. In terms of specific solutions, Exynos 1080 chose the ten-core solution. After official testing, under the Mahattan v3 standard, the overall performance of Exynos 1080 GPU has increased by 2.3 times. With the support of powerful graphics performance, Exynos 1080 can use up to FHD+ resolution 144Hz refresh rate screen to meet the needs of high refresh rate games.

At the same time, in order to optimize the gaming experience in all aspects, Samsung Exynos has exclusively developed the Amigo power distribution solution, which matches different scheduling schemes by real-time monitoring of power consumption during the game, so that high-performance power efficiency is increased by 10%.​​

Combined with the selection and optimization of CPU and GPU, it is not difficult to see that as a flagship processor, Exynos 1080 not only provides strong performance support, but also provides a large number of power optimization solutions simultaneously. Obviously, in the design of the entire product, performance is not just the whole of Exynos 1080. In the 5G era, strong performance accompanied by outstanding low-power consumption experience is the core concept of the Exynos 1080 chip.

When it comes to the 5G era, photography is also a core function. In this regard, Exynos 1080 series processors are equally unambiguous.

In terms of cameras, Exynos 1080 supports a single camera with a maximum of 200 million pixels and can support a maximum of 6 cameras. At the same time, Exynos 1080 has also made great efforts in optimization. Exynos 1080 is equipped with an exclusive customized ISP architecture for image processing capabilities. At the same time, Exynos uses NPU to intervene in ISP, and can intelligently adjust various parameters to better values ​​through machine learning in the original RAW domain, allowing ISP to better adjust White balance, exposure, chroma, saturation, sharpness, etc. With this combination of ISP and NPU collaborative work, Exynos has created the industry's only AISP architecture.

In addition, Exynos 1080 also adds a hardware-level temporal noise reduction module (TNR), which can perform better and faster noise reduction processing in the RAW domain to further improve the picture effect. TNR cooperates with AISP to have a more outstanding performance in noise reduction for night scene video. I believe that in the next products, the image will also become the home of the Exynos 1080 processor.

When it comes to the 5G era, it is the signal support and performance that most need to return to the heart. According to official information, Exynos 1080 supports 5G network speeds up to 5.1Gbps, supports millimeter wave and Sub-6GHz frequency bands, and provides support for 4G, 3G, and 2G networks.
