TSMC to build a 2nm chip factory in the US? Mass production of 5nm this year!

On March 18th, the Nikkei reported that the United States hopes that TSMC will set up factories in U.S. states, and the chairman of TSMC said that although the United States requires them to set up factories, they will put the needs of customers first and consider it Is it feasible to build a factory.

If TSMC builds a factory in the United States, it is likely to be used to produce chips for the 2nm process. For semiconductor chips, advances in technology can increase the number of transistors on the chip, thereby improving performance. For example, Apple's A13 has 8.5 billion transistors, and the A14 chip that will be put into production will have 15 billion transistors.

However, in TSMC's plan, the 5nm process will begin mass production next month, and the 3nm process is expected to be launched in 2022-2023, so the 2nm process may not be seen until 2024.

However, TSMC's largest customers are Apple and Huawei. Huawei's cooperation with TSMC in 2019 accounted for 10% of TSMC's annual revenue (2019 revenue of 35.7 billion US dollars). Although TSMC puts customers first, if TSMC builds a plant in the United States, TSMC will be pinned somewhat.
